About us

A small crew that reads the soil first

Garden advice usually starts with plants. We start with what's under them, because a bed that's low in organic matter or off on acidity won't be fixed by planting more.

We're five people in season, working Madison and the towns around it. Judit writes the plan from each soil report, and George and Jacob carry it out, a bed and a month at a time. You'll see the same faces each visit, and the card we leave says what we did.

  • A soil report before any work

  • A written plan in plain words

  • The same crew each month

Who comes to your garden

Two more people join us from April to October.

  • A woman in a straw hat, apron and gloves tends orange marigolds in a garden bed

    Judit Duda

    Owner and soil lead

Judit reads every soil report and writes the plan for every garden. She started the company because most garden advice starts with plants, and she wanted to start with what's under them.

  • A grey-haired man with a beard, in a checked shirt and black apron, stands beside leafy shrubs

    George Carter

    Garden lead

George runs the monthly visits and writes the card you find after each one: what went on the beds, what to watch, and what we'll do next time.

  • A young man in a green apron and orange gloves stands in a greenhouse holding a watering can

    Jacob Bennett

    Crew, pruning and clean-ups

Jacob does the pruning and the spring and fall clean-ups, and tells the rest of us when a shrub needs a closer look.
